International event UISS 2015 sponsored by the Biochemical Society

‘The inaugural UTAR Intervarsity Scientific Symposium 2015 (UISS 2015) was successfully held at UTAR Perak Campus on the 21st March 2015.

Jointly organised by UTAR Centre for Biodiversity Research (CBR) and the University Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR) which including Biological Science Society and the Faculty of Science (FSc). The one day seminar was an assembly point for over 150 undergraduate students from UTAR and other institutions of higher learning such as University Putra Malaysia (UPM), University Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) and University Teknologi Petronas (UTP).

The main objective of this symposium is to provide an interactive platform for undergraduates from different institutions around the region to exhibit their research findings and exchange ideas. This symposium will be an outstanding experience, both scientifically and socially. It made it possible to congregate with old colleagues and new friends to share the most important aspects of their scientific research and the rapid advances scientific research globally, leading to the formation of strong networks between the students, industry and academy sectors. The agenda of UISS 2015 covers biotechnology, biochemistry, chemical sciences, health sciences and agricultural and food sciences-related topics.

Also present was FSc, Professorial Chair in Agricultural Science Prof Dr Peter Ooi Aun Chuan who extended his warm welcome to the speakers and participants. “I like to echo my thanks to our distinguished guest speakers to share their experiences with the undergraduates. Personally, I am very grateful to meet my former tutor whom I first met when I was an undergraduate some 40 years ago. I wish you all a good learning experience from this symposium,” he said in his opening address.

With 14 oral presenters and 30 poster presenters, the elevating discussions and exchange of ideas amongst the participants were further intensified with enriching keynote addresses by five seasoned speakers, namely Prof. Dr. Koh Chung Lek from University of Malaya (UM), Prof. Dr. Wickneswari Ratnam from UKM, Prof. Dr. K. Sudesh Kumar from University Sains Malaysia (USM), Prof Dr Peter Ooi Aun Chuan from UTAR, Associate Prof. Dr. Liong Min Tze and Dr. Lim Gin Keat from USM, Dr. Mohd Azmuddin Abdullah from University Malaysia Terengganu (UMT), Dr. Neo Kian-Eang and Dr. Tan Chew Khun from UTAR. An added bonus to the seminar was a talk by industry experts Mr. Kong Kah Chuen, Dr. Ng Thian Hong, Dr. Thuan D. Bui, Mr. Kong Kah Chuen and Dr. Chuah Chaw Teo from various sector of industry on the updated scientific research for industry applications.

The one-day symposium officially came to an end after an announcement of winners for best oral and poster presentations.’
