The Nuffield Foundation supports the next generation of researchers by working with organisations such as Higher Education institutions, research institutes, science centres and museums, field centres, industry and manufacturing and more to provide opportunities for talented A-level students to gain experience of research, in order to support their important decisions regarding university and career choice.
Participating students undertake a 4-6 week placement in their summer break; working on a new or ongoing research project in Science, Engineering, Technology or Mathematics, alongside a research professional. The Nuffield Foundation has been running the scheme in science for over 10 years and places around a 1000 students a year nationally. We are currently looking for projects for this year’s students. All of the Nuffield students are of a high calibre and are expected to produce work to a verity high standard on the scheme.
Nuffield students will require supervision and guidance, but in return they can make a significant contribution to your organisation. In addition, supervising a student helps researchers to develop their own teaching and mentoring skills. This is particularly useful for PhD students, postdoctoral researchers, and staff looking to gain management experience.
We particularly encourage students who don’t have a family history of going to university or who attend schools in less well-off areas. We make sure no-one is excluded on a financial basis by covering students’ travel costs. Some students may also be eligible for a weekly bursary in addition to travel expenses.
The application system is now open and we are currently seeking researchers who may be able to host a student this summer. If you think you may be able to please get in touch with Sophie Robinson (firstname.lastname@example.org) or Karn Goodchild (email@example.com) at the Nuffield Foundation NRP team.
