A* Science Clubs is a programme to enthuse Ugandan secondary school students with revolutionary, cutting-edge or controversial science through guided science club challenges and inspirational events.
Invited members of the Uganda A* Science Clubs Committee assembled for their inaugural meeting at Mbarara University of Science and Technology (MUST) earlier this month. This enthusiastic and respected team was appointed following the wonderful news that the Biochemical Society has agreed to continue to support the Ugandan Science Club project for another year.
Committee member John Okumu and A* Clubs Co-ordinator (Uganda) Deus Tusubira have spent the last two days traveling around our 10 participating schools, inviting teams of up to eight students to represent their club in the 2013 A* Science Club Brain Masterclass to be held at MUST. Masterclass events are designed to inspire students with knowledge and activities which they take back to their schools to share with peers and the wider community. In addition to expert talks and practical activities, we will be asking teams to prepare a short presentation discussing the use of cognitive enhancers.
Biochemical Society Education Committee member Dr Nick Dixon will be joining myself and our new local committee to help out with the Masterclass event on 6th April and to recruit more schools onto the scheme.
Finally, congratulations to the A* Science Club of Hallmark High School who successfully completed their Project Challenge on biogas production today!
