Future Fridays: Careers support for undergraduate and postgraduate students

As a biochemistry undergraduate or PhD student there are numerous different career options available to you, bioscience graduates can be found in a variety of jobs, and are highly sought after by many employers.

Here at the Society we hope to support students in making informed decisions about their career, and help equip them with the right skills, knowledge and provide access to information. We do this through a number of activities highlighted below . . . .

“Next steps: options after a bioscience degree” is a booklet aimed at undergraduate bioscience students, jointly produced by sister societies who sit on the Bioscience Careers Group. The booklet includes information on job postgraduate study options, seeking strategies, making applications, has example CV’s and an extensive resource list. Read the online version of the booklet.

Online careers information at www.biochemistry.org/careers, with advice and links on various topics including postgraduate options in and from science, applying for a PhD, internships and placements and interview techniques.

Student Focus is a section of our member’s magazine, The Biochemist, dedicated to students. Within this section we feature careers articles on a number of topics. You can read the latest article here, and the rest of the articles can be viewed in our Member’s Area. Within this Member’s Area, we also have a student notice board where we post suitable opportunities and information about new resources.

We attend a number of careers fairs with a number of related sister societies where we provide with on-the-spot advice and resources. You can see a list if the events we are attending on the Bioscience Careers Group.

The Bioscience Careers Workshops and the Post-doctoral Careers Workshops are afternoon events that include an interactive careers workshop with a qualified careers advisor that specialises in the biosciences, and a speed networking session where attendees can meet professionals from a variety of background in an informal setting. You can find out where the next event is on the careers events pages
